Definition of CKD-MBD

  1. A systemic disorder that incorporates  abnormalities of mineral and bone metabolism, manifested by either one or a combination of the following three components:
    1. Biochemical Abnormalities of  Ca, P, PTH,  FGF23, and vitamin D metabolism.
    2.  Bone Abnormalities in bone turnover, mineralization, volume, linear growth, or strength.
    3. Extra skeletal calcification (vascular/ other soft tissue).
  2. Term "renal osteodystrophy" is now exclusively used to define alterations in bone morphology associated with CKD based upon bone biopsy (histomorphometric classification)
